A chance encounter between people who share a vision starts everything. The band Molecule and the dancer-choreographer Sylvain Groud with threedancers, mix their paintbrushes for an exceptional concert-performance under the sign of dub. Over six months their work method was like an unique laboratory : each to himself and yet together. Molecule sent music samples that Sylvain Groud immediately reacted to «like a guinea pig in a drug trial». Momentum, pullback, race, the sound injection is the perfect «stimulant» to generate sensations, dance. From one email to the next, the score was refined by the tune of their chiseled and strangely intimate conversation, surfing on Molecule's tweakings and reaching it's choreographic target. To wrap up what Sylvain Groud calls the «exhilarating rumpus of the organs» that Molecule's atmospheric flows provide him with, they rehearsed side by side, imbued with the emergency of a single fantastic feat. And one single wish: to make the audience feel all the good vibes that this dub gives the performers. Even if it means being submerged by the audience in a collective dance. Molecule and Sylvain Groud made the bet of an absolute meeting of the minds.
Groud, Sylvain
In 1991, received his diploma from the CNSMD of Paris, contemporary dance section and the same year received the prize for best performance at the Bagnolet competition with the Gigi Caciuleanu company. From 1992 to 2002, he is a dancer for the choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. He is alo an award winner at the Concours International de Paris with his first choreography, and then creates for the National Theater of Bucarest in Romania and the Opera of Skopje in Macedonia. Created in 2002, the Compagnie Sylvain Groud moves to Normandy in 2006 and is in residency for three years in Vernon. In 2007, his work "Si vous voulez bien me suivre", is noticed. In 2009, the experiences shared with the cultural mission of the University Hospital of Rouen led the company to a residency at the Boucicaut retirement home at Mont-Saint-Aignan. In 2010, the Opera of Rouen places an order for Cordes, works for eight dancers, twenty-four musicians under the director Benjamin Levy. Continuing this questioning about the relationship between music and dance, he creates Héros Ordinaires in 2011 for four dancers and four opera singers and Collusion for four dancers and the electro composer Molecule. In 2010, Je suis descendu du plateau, was born of a meeting with the writer Maylis de Kerangal. The same year he is invited to meet five hip hop dancers at Suresnes Cités Danse, and creates Elles a piece that is continued with the solo Ma leçon de hip hop in 2013. In 2012, he orders a piece from the visual artist Jonathan Loppin. Together, they create Chambre 209, a choreographic and digital installation on four sides. In 2013, enthralled by Steve Reich’s music, Sylvain Groud creates a choreography to Music for 18 Musicians performed live by the Links Ensemble.
With his in situ projects, such as People (over two hundered performances to date), Sylvain Groud is endeavouring to make dance burst forth where it isn’t expected.
Since 2010, the company has been in residency at the Scène Nationale of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and Sylvain Groud will be associate artist at the Scène Nationale of Montbéliard since 2011. With a repertoire of 21th creations ranging from solos to large ensemble pieces, the company tours with five pieces on average, over sixty performances each year, a third of which are in situ. He’s at the head of the Centre National Chorégraphique of Roubaix Nord Pas de Calais since the end of 2017.
