Unfinished Fragments

The fragility of a fragmented moment, stolen time, time that flies. Tormented by the desire to grab hold of the moment, the American poet, Charis Southwell, engraves her impressions on bits of paper.

A few fragments of her poems give rise to the expressiveness of a vibrant dance that sculpts space, where bodies are projected by the dissonances and diffractions of sensitive, all-embracing jazz music.

Composed of eight décors, “Unfinished Fragments” begins with an introductory dance, “Prologue”, before traversing a selection of six poems. Without seeking to illustrate and without wishing to tell a tale, the text and metaphors of the poet inspire the very substance of the dance, which will weave its way through introspection, delicate movements, jubilation of the rhythm and relationships to others.

Karagozian, Patricia

The American, Patricia Greenwood Karagozian began her career in the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. With the Civic Light Opera of Pittsburgh, she danced and performed in eighteen musical comedies, including West Side Story, Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon and Applause.

Having obtained a “Certificat d'Aptitude” (French artistic education diploma) in jazz dance in 1994, she worked for the French State Diploma in several private centres and Cefedems and for the Certificat d'Aptitude at the CND and at the CNSMD in Lyon. In 2003, she was awarded a Professional Degree in Functional Analysis of the Body in the Danced Movement. She was a co-author of the pedagogical guide “Enseigner la Danse Jazz” (Teaching Jazz dance), published by the CND in 2007.

She choreographed the jazz part of the “Cygne, etc.”, a solo written for Pedro Pauwels in 2000, West Side Story (2000) and Cats (2004) which were performed at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Focusing on improvisation and on the music-dance relationship, she has improvised in concert in various jazz festivals with Philippe la Carrière, Benoît Sourisse, Olivier Temine, etc.

Since 2006, Patricia Greenwood Karagozian has been the Chair of the CodaJazz Association, whose aim is to promote and support the quality and acknowledgement of jazz dance in France.

In 2011, she created the PGK Company to promote choreographic activity in a medium of jazz expression.

Centre national de la danse, Réalisation

Since 2001, the National Center for Dance (CND) has been making recordings of its shows and educational programming and has created resources from these filmed performances (interviews, danced conferences, meetings with artists, demonstrations, major lessons, symposia specialized, thematic arrangements, etc.).

PGK

Created to explore choreographic creativity through musical and sensitive expression, PGK has fully embraced its jazz identity since its creation in 2011. In all of its creative projects, dance is inseparable from a musical score that is alive and present on stage. As for its artists, they are all actors in their own right, bringing to life the various choreographic projects of Compagnie PGK. The company comprises four dancers and four musicians; The dancers: Emmanuelle Duc, Georgey Souchette, Magali Verin, Vivien VisentinThe musicians: Mike Karagozian (pianist, composer and musical director) Ronald Baker (trumpet and vocals) Stephane Miñana Ripoll (drums) Fred Tronche (double bass)

Meeting with literature

Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
