Flamenco se escribe con jota

“Flamenco se escribe con jota” celebrates the natural dialogue between flamenco and the Aragonese jota. The two forms have a strong historical link going back two hundred years ago to when Cadiz and Zaragoza were both Andalusian territory. They are also both deeply rooted in popular culture. This strong identity manifests itself in the song lyrics (letras): cantes for flamenco, cantas for jota. A deep and mysterious link which this show reveals, led by the brilliant virtuoso jota dancer (bailador) Miguel Ángel Berna, who transcends the jota of folklore and makes it totally contemporary, futuristic even. He weaves together a moving encounter between the more earth-bound flamenco of dancer (bailaora) Úrsula López and bailaor Rafael Campallo, whose talent, youth and beauty explode over the combined sounds of the three singers and five musicians from Andalusia and Aragon.

Campallo, Rafael

Born in Seville in 1974, Rafael Campallo is a pure flamenco, a dancer of elegance and authority. At the age of eleven, he learned to dance alongside José Galván, then Manolo Marin, with whom he performed on stage. At seventeen, he decided to pursue a solo career. In 1992 he performed in the show “Azabache” at the Universal Exhibition in Seville and in the same year Maria Pagès chose him for her composition “Tango”, presented at the Flamenco Biennial. He won the El Desplante prize in the La Unión Competition. Over the course of his extensive artistic career, he has danced to the playing of great guitarists such as Vicente Amigo, and for over four years now, he has toured with his own eponymous company.

Berna, Miguel Angel

Born in 1968 in Zaragoza, Miguel Ángel Berna is the most contemporary exponent of the jota, a dance which he has practised since he was eight years old. At the age of seventeen, he won first prize in the city of Zaragoza's official jota competition with the dancer Ana Cristina Araiz. In 1990 he formed his own company Danza Viva, with which he produced many works acclaimed by press and audiences alike. He took a new look at the jota, updated it with contemporary nuances, at the same time moving towards flamenco, notably demonstrated in his show “Mudéjar”. A winner of the national choreographic prize, he also took part in Carlos Saura's film “Iberia”.

Lopez, Ursula

Ursula López was born in Montilla (Córdoba).  She began her academic formation at a very young age, graduating both in classical Spanish dance and ballet and soon traveled to Seville to pursue her studies in the discipline of flamenco with great masters such as Manolete and Manolo Marín, being the latter one who initiated her in her professional career in the opera Carmen under the direction of Carlos Saura.

In 1996 she became a member of the Compañía Andaluza de Danza, where she remained during eight years. She participated as a soloist in all the performances, traveling through the world´s main festivals and theaters. Some of these works include “El Perro Andaluz” by Maria Pagés, “La Vida Breve” by Jose Antonio for the inauguration of Madrid´s Royal Theatre, “Latido Flamenco” by Manolete, “Cosas de Payos” by Javier Latorre, “Ramito de Locura” by Javier Barón, “Dharma” by Eva la Yerbabuena and “Bodas de Sangre” in one of Antonio Gadés latest works interpreting the exemplary part of “The Woman” for Granada´s Festival.

Ursula also succeeded in the Seville´s Flamenco Biennial in 2004 with the works of ”Don Juan Flamenco”, with Rafael Campallo and “Asimetrías” by Andrés Marín.

In November of 2004 Ursula became a guest artist of the “Ballet Nacional de España” where she remained until 2006, touring during this time the show “La Leyenda” and “Café de Chinitas” under the direction of Jose Antonio Ruiz.

In 2007 Ursula started her own company and released her first work “Abriendo Camino” for the 2007 Flamenco Festival of Jerez.

In 2008 she came back to the festival in the production “Flamenco se escribe con jota” with Miguel Angel Berna and Rafael Campallo.

She collaborated with Joaquín Grilo in “Belmonte” receiving the audience award in the Flamenco Festival of Jerez in 2010.

In September 2012 she released along with her company the new production “La Otra Piel” in the Flamenco Biennial of Seville, show that was also performed in the Villamarta theatre for the Jerez Flamenco Festival in 2013 with great success among the critics and the audience.

Ursula participated with David Peña (Dorantes) and Javier Ruibal in a very interesting concept and artistic dialogue called “InterAcción”.

Her latest performances in Moscow, Zaragoza, Kiev (Ukraine), Bucharest, Chisinau (Moldavia), Cordoba, Amsterdam and her next participation in the Fourth “Festival Iberica Contemporánea” in Querétaro México are intertwined with teaching by giving workshops all over the world not to mention in “Flamencodanza Studio”, her own school in Seville.

Riolon, Luc

After studies of mathematics preparatory class and medecine studies, Luc Riolon begins to make films within the framework of his Faculty of Medicine, then met the famous choreographers of the 80s (Maguy Marin, Mark Tompkins, Josef Nadj, Daniel Larrieu Daniel, Odile Duboc, Josette Baiz, Angelin Prljocaj, etc.) with whom he shoots numerous films (re-creation for the camera, the illegal securements). In the 80s with the American choreographer Mark Tompkins he introduces the video on the stage, broadcasting live on big screens the images which he shoots with his camera by being on the stage with the dancers, mixing live images and pre-recorded images. With Daniel Larrieu he participates in the creation of the famous show WATERPROOF, the contemporary choreography which takes place in a swimming pool, by filming live) the dancers dancing in the water and mixing the live images with pre-recorded underwater images. This choreography has been shown in many countries (USA, Canada, Spain, England…)
Then he collaborates during 10 years with the famous french TV producer Eve Ruggieri for her programs" Musics in the heart ". He shoots with her of numerous documentaries about classical music, opera singers and dance. From 1999 he directs documentaries of scientific popularization, by following researchers attached to the resolution of a particular ecologic enigma. These two artistic and scientific domains which can seem separated are nevertheless, for Luc Riolon, connected by the same approach : the deep desire to understand the world, by the art or by the scientific research, and to restore it to the largest number. Among his recent scientific documentaries, we can quote for example " The Enigma of the Black Caiman ", Living and dying in the swamp " or " The Nile delta: The end of the miracle ". “Chernobyl, a natural history ? “ These documentaries of scientific popularization recently have been awarded in international festivals.
