Few of the choreographic performances that Valeska Gert intended for the stage have ever been filmed. Her Tod (Death) is one of them that, as its title suggests, pictures a series of bodily states where the stretching out in time of a silent death rattle depicts an ultimate physical struggle with the inevitable. The interpretation given here forms a free appropriation, elaborated from the only two existing recordings dating from 1925 and 1969.

Gert, Valeska
Valeska Gert could be considered one of Germany’s most ambiguous and overlooked artists. She was a dancer, actress, film and cabaret star. She was a pioneering performance artist who is said to have laid the foundations and paved the way for the punk movement.
Gert was born as Gertrud Valesca Samosch in Berlin to a Jewish family. She was the eldest daughter of manufacturer Theodor Samosch and Augusta Rosenthal. Exhibiting no interest in academics or office work, she began taking dance lessons at the age of nine. This, combined with her love of ornate fashion, led her to a career in dance and performance art. In 1915, she studied acting with Maria Moissi.

Wavelet, Christophe
Art critic and curator, Christophe Wavelet co-directed the activities of the Quatuor Knust project (1993-2001), sat on the editorial boards of the journals Vacarme and Mouvement, watched over the activities of the international research pole at the National Center of Dance, then directed the LiFE- International Place of Emerging Forms (2005-2010), institution dedicated to the production and diffusion of contemporary scenes of art. His articles and essays are published in numerous magazines and occasionally in exhibition catalogs. Prioritizing discursive projects from different cultural areas, in 2012 and 2013 he was the laureate of the Akademie Schloss Solitude, and worked on an essay and the French translation of Writings of the Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica. He also designed and curated the "Scenes de Geste" program at the CND in November 2015.
Monnier, Mathilde
Mathilde Monnier occupies a place of reference in the landscape of French and international contemporary dance. From piece to piece, she thwarts expectations by presenting work in constant renewal.
Her appointment as head of the Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Choreographic Center in 1994 marked the beginning of a series of collaborations with personalities from various artistic fields (Jean-Luc Nancy, Katerine, Christine Angot, La Ribot, Heiner Goebbels.. .).
She created more than 50 choreographic pieces presented on major international stages like the Avignon Festival, the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, passing through New York, Vienna, Berlin, London and receiving several prizes for her work (Ministry of Culture prize, SACD Grand Prize).
After directing the CND National Dance Center in Paris, Mathilde Monnier resumed her creative work in 2019 with several pieces like Please Please Please (2019) which she created in collaboration with La Ribot & Tiago Rodiguez, Records (2021) and her latest, Black Lights (2023).
Since 2020, Mathilde Monnier and her company have residing at the Halle Tropisme in Montpellier.
