L'âne chargé d'éponges et l'âne chargé de sel

Recording of the performance of the show "Lâne chargé d'éponges et l'âne chargé de sel" by Jérôme Brabant (Cie l'Octogonale) and Pierre Fourny (ALIS) at the Pierrefonds Saint-Pierre Theater (Réunion Island) during the Souffle o.I. #3 Festival organized by Lalanbik - Center for Choreographic Development o.I.

Brabant, Jérôme

Jérôme Brabant is a choreographer, born in 1973 at Saint-Pierre in Reunion Island. He studied theatre at Paris 8 University and the Mimodrame Marcel Marceau School. In 2001 he joined the Toulouse/Midi-Pyrenées Choreographic Development Centre to follow the “Extensions” course and started his career as a dancer-performer for several companies: Marco Berrettini’s *Melk Prod, the Samuel Mathieu company, the Patricia Ferrara company/Unber-Humber Group.

Jérôme Brabant started working as a choreographer from 2002, when he founded the UND und ballet with Marion Muzac. He created his first pieces: Roomy Dancing in 2002, Gala in 2003 and Pavilion in 2004.

In 2011 he founded his Octogonale Company on Reunion Island. His return to the island was the opportunity for him to search for a choreography that focused on the island’s identity. He created his first solo, Heimat, “the country you carry within you”.

In 2014, he produced his second solo performance called Impair, which was inspired by the craft of his grandparents, who were well-known for their knowledge of medicinal plants and magnetic healing.

In 2015, Jérôme Brabant collaborated with New Gravity, a group of free runners, and with them he created the piece Emergency.

In 2016, he researched exoticism with Maud Pizon and created A Taste of Ted, a group of solos adapted from original creations by Ted Shawn.

Fourny, Pierre

Pierre Fourny is a director, performer-handyman, word cutter, and manipulator. Within ALIS, he captures visual rhymes for shows featuring images, objects, and written words.

Alis

Founded in 1982 by Pierre Fourny and based in the Aisne department in Fère-en-Tardenois since 1990, ALIS develops an artistic practice that escapes conventionally recognised disciplines and that the vocabulary of the theatre of objects and the visual theatre is trying to adopt.

In its multi-layered artistic activities (stage performances, stage sets, design of objects, videos, books, etc.), ALIS strives to handle and reroute universally recognisable signs (advertising images, everyday objects, symbols, etc.) to give them other meanings. It is in this same “do-it-yourself and poaching” frame of mind that ALIS has appropriated image technologies, first slides and then digital images.

From the year 2000 onwards, ALIS has focused on the proliferation of “Poésie à 2 mi-mots” (a technique imagined by Pierre Fourny that could be translated in English as 2 half-words poetry) with a particular interest in the handling and rerouting of the letters in our alphabet, in words, writing and reading in a media-crazed contemporary context that tends to revolutionalise their use.

The company has symbolically made Fère-en-Tardenois the capital of this poetic experience and its challenges, a point of anchorage from which it continually seeks to reach out widely and share its experiences.

Compagnie l'Octogonale

For alchemists, the octagon represents the perfect blend between the square (human) and the circle (divine). This concept of combining two opposing elements is something that Jérôme Brabant, the choreographer of the company, enjoys exploring in his dance and creations.

In Réunion, our culture of the supernatural is inseparable from who we are. The octagon is a geometric figure with 8 sides, 8 faces, offering as many possibilities as the facets of a gemstone, reflecting a multitude of colors.

In the dance of the company L’Octogonale, Jérôme Brabant often starts with a single movement, which he then develops into a constantly changing landscape.
