Naharin, Ohad

Born in 1952 on Kibbutz Mizra, Ohad Naharin began his dance training with Batsheva Dance Company in 1974. During his first year with the Company, guest
choreographer Martha Graham singled out Naharin for his talent and invited him to join her own company in New York. Whilst in New York, Naharin studied on a scholarship from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation at the School of American Ballet, The Juilliard School, and with Maggie Black and David Howard. He went on to perform one season with Israelā€™s Bat-Dor Dance Company and Maurice Bejarts Ballet du XXe Siecle in Brussels.

Naharin returned to New York in 1980, making his choreographic debut at the Kazuko Hirabayshi studio. From 1980 until 1990, Naharin has presented his works in New
York and abroad and was invited to create works for different companies, including Batsheva, the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, and Nederlands Dans Theater. Simultaneously, he regularly worked in New York with a group of dancers on different projects, together with his first wife, Mari Kajiwara. Naharin and Kajiwara worked together for many years, up to her death from cancer in 2001.

Naharin was appointed Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company in 1990 and has served in this role until today. During his tenure with the company, Naharin choreographed over 30 works for Batsheva and its junior division, Batsheva - the Young Ensemble. Alongside his work as a choreographer, Naharin developed Gaga, an innovative movement language intended for everyone. The dancers of Batsheva Dance Company train with Gaga on a daily basis, and it is also taught to dancers and the public worldwide by certified teachers.

Chaillot-ThĆ©Ć¢tre national de la Danse

The ThĆ©Ć¢tre National de Chaillot is  one of the five French national theatres (public institutions whose  missions are defined by the State) and the only one to have a project  built around and based on dance. Under the double supervision of the  Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Ministry of Budget, it has  been directed since 2011 by the choreographer and dancer Didier  Deschamps.

The legend of Chaillot

Installed at the heart of the Palais de Chaillot, the ThĆ©Ć¢tre  National de Chaillot, that became in 2016 Chaillot ā€“ National Theatre of  Dance, is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions of Paris,  not only for the unique place it has in the history of performing arts ā€“  namely with the great adventure of the National Popular Theatre founded  by Firmin GĆ©mier, then carried and developed by the mythical  personality of Jean Vilar ā€“ but also in that of France and the world as  it is in the big theatre room that the Universal Declaration of Human  Rights was signed on the 10th of December 1948. An  exceptional venue in the capital, the theatre can welcome each night  more than 1 600 spectators, in its three rooms (Salle Jean Vilar of 1  200 seats, Salle Firmin GĆ©mier of 390 seats, Studio Maurice BĆ©jart of  100 seats). Its Grand Foyer facing the TrocadĆ©ro Fountain, the Eiffel  Tower and the Champ-de-Mars, permanently offers one of the most famous  views in the world. The public spaces of the theatre are also host to an  important collection of sculptures, paintings, frescoes and pastels  signed by the greatest artists of their time: Paul Belmondo, Louis  Billotey, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Brianchon, Roger Chapelain-Midy,  Maurice Denis, Othon Friesz, Henri Laurens, Aristide Maillol as well as  Ć‰douard Vuillard.
