Charles Picq imagined his film like a serenade, short and sharp. Carolyn Carlson, “a multifaceted woman”, dives head first into her history, evokes her master Alwin Nikolais, her nomination at the Opera in Paris as resident choreographer in the 1980s and the creation of the choreographic research group at the Opera that she calls her “laboratory of creation”.
 

We follow her to Venice, where Blue Lady was premiered before touring the world. Then, back to the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, where her world became considerably more theatrical, nourished with spirituality. Those who were her accomplices and her close circle confirm the evolution of her career path: the dancers Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Lario Ekson and the composer René Aubry who shared her life for fifteen years. The composer Michel Portal, privileged accomplice of the creation of the Carlsonian gesture, recalls the improvisation and a certain wantonness. “I was part of the hippie subculture, but offering flowers is not enough. They need to be ripped to shreds and offered in another way”, said Carlson.

Née en  Californie, Carolyn Carlson se définit avant tout comme une nomade. De  la baie de San Francisco à l’Université d’Utah, de la compagnie d’Alwin  Nikolais à New York à celle d’Anne Béranger en France, de l’Opéra de  Paris au Teatrodanza La Fenice à Venise, du Théâtre de la Ville à  Helsinki, du Ballet de l’Opéra de Bordeaux à la Cartoucherie de Paris,  de la Biennale de Venise à Roubaix, Carolyn Carlson est une infatigable  voyageuse, toujours en quête de développer et faire partager son univers  poétique.

Héritière  des conceptions du mouvement, de la composition et de la pédagogie  d’Alwin Nikolais, elle est arrivée en France en 1971. Elle a signé  l’année suivante, avec Rituel pour un rêve mort, un manifeste  poétique qui définit une approche de son travail qu’elle n’a pas démenti  depuis : une danse assurément tournée vers la philosophie et la  spiritualité. Au terme « chorégraphie », Carolyn Carlson préfère celui  de « poésie visuelle » pour désigner son travail. Donner naissance à des  œuvres témoins de sa pensée poétique, et à une forme d’art complet au  sein de laquelle le mouvement occupe une place privilégiée.

Depuis quatre décennies, son influence et  son succès sont considérables dans de nombreux pays européens. Elle a  joué un rôle clef dans l’éclosion des danses contemporaines françaises  et italiennes avec le GRTOP à l’Opéra de Paris et le Teatrodanza à La  Fenice. Elle a créé plus d’une centaine de pièces, dont un grand nombre  constituent des pages majeures de l’histoire de la danse, de Density 21,5 à The Year of the horse, de Blue Lady à Steppe, de Maa à Signes, de Writings on water à Inanna.  En 2006, son œuvre a été couronnée par le premier Lion d’Or jamais  attribué à un chorégraphe par la Biennale de Venise. Elle est aussi  commandeur des Arts et Lettres, et officier de la Légion d’honneur.

Fondatrice de l'Atelier de Paris-Carolyn Carlson à La Cartoucherie en 1999, elle a été, avec la Carolyn Carlson Company, artiste associée au Théâtre National de Chaillot de 2014 à 2016. En 2019, elle obtient la nationalité française et est élue l’année suivante membre de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts section chorégraphie. En 2023, la chorégraphe met la transmission et l’enseignement au coeur des projets de sa compagnie, en parallèle de la diffusion de son répertoire hors norme.

Author, filmmaker and video artist Charles Picq (1952-2012) entered working life in the 70s through theatre and photography. A- fter resuming his studies (Maîtrise de Linguistique - Lyon ii, Maîtrise des sciences et Techniques de la Communication - grenoble iii), he then focused on video, first in the field of fine arts at the espace Lyonnais d'art Contemporain (ELAC) and with the group « Frigo », and then in dance.
   On creation of the Maison de la Danse in Lyon in 1980, he was asked to undertake a video documentation project that he has continued ever since. During the ‘80s, a decade marked in France by the explosion of contemporary dance and the development of video, he met numerous artists such as andy Degroat, Dominique Bagouet, Carolyn Carlson, régine Chopinot, susanne Linke, Joëlle Bouvier and regis Obadia, Michel Kelemenis. He worked in the creative field with installations and on-stage video, as well as in television with recorded shows, entertainment and documentaries.

His work with Dominique Bagouet (80-90) was a unique encounter. He documents his creativity, assisting with Le Crawl de Lucien and co-directing with his films Tant Mieux, Tant Mieux and 10 anges. in the 90s he became director of video development for the Maison de la Danse and worked, with the support of guy Darmet and his team, in the growing space of theatre video through several initiatives:
       - He founded a video library of dance films with free public access. This was a first for France. Continuing the video documentation of theatre performances, he organised their management and storage.
       - He promoted the creation of a video-bar and projection room, both dedicated to welcoming school pupils.
       - He started «présentations de saisons» in pictures.
       - He oversaw the DVD publication of Le tour du monde en 80 danses, a pocket video library produced by the Maison de la Danse for the educational sector.

       - He launched the series “scènes d'écran” for television and online. He undertook the video library's digital conversion and created Numeridanse.

His main documentaries are: enchaînement, Planète Bagouet, Montpellier le saut de l'ange, Carolyn Carlson, a woman of many faces, grand ecart, Mama africa, C'est pas facile, Lyon, le pas de deux d'une ville, Le Défilé, Un rêve de cirque.
