Shaker Loops

Andonis Foniadakis has chosen for his first choreographic work at the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine, one of John Adams’ most popular pieces, Shaker Loops. This piece, created in 1978 for a string septet (the version presented in this program) was then adapted in 1983 for orchestra. It has become an emblematic, major work in the minimalist genre, particularly because of its inventive use of loops and waves.

The choreographer was struck by the frenetic strangeness of the music. Its vibration influenced his way of creating his dance for the company, impelling him to create a sensitive choreographic template which would be parallel to the John Adams piece.

Andonis Foniadakis also reveals other facets of his work, reflecting the disturbing turbulence of our time. All of it comes together in this electrifying combination of John Adams’s music and the powerful dancing he has created for the dancers at the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine.

Meeting with literature

Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
