A choreographic postcard is a three-minute danced duet that responds to choreographic, musical and filmic rules that allow aesthetic sharing. » Dominique Hervieu
This project was initially entitled "« L’Art de la rencontre, – Cartes postales chorégraphiques pour les francofffonies ! » And was sponsored by francofffonies! festival francophone in France (March 16-October 9, 2006).
It gave rise to the creation of twelve filmed duets, including six from the Montalvo-Hervieu Company and six from Malian, Tunisian and Cambodian choreographers, grouped together in a DVD: « L’Art de la rencontre, – Cartes postales chorégraphiques pour les francofffonies ! » by Dominique Hervieu

Hervieu, Dominique

Born in 1962 in Coutances (Normandy, France), Dominique Hervieu has had a voracious appetite for every form of movement since she was six years old. After her first love, gymnastics, she elected dance as the new object of her passion : classical dance, at first, which she practised for a dozen years, mainly with Michèle Latini; and then contemporary dance, with Peter Goss, Alwin Nicolais and Hervé Diasnas.

In 1981, she met José Montalvo and with him developed an original gestural language – fluid, rapid and precise – that would impart a singular style to their works. In 1988, their close artistic bond yielded Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu, which performs at the leading venues in France and beyond. Ten years and five new pieces later, the duo were appointed to head the Centre Chorégraphique National de Créteil et du Val-de- Marne. Since 2000, Dominique Hervieu has co- devised all the pieces by Compagnie Montalvo- Hervieu, which ranks among the most popular and recognised contemporary-dance companies in France and abroad.

In 2000, they specially created Variation au Paradis for the opening ceremony of the Cannes International Film Festival. That year, Dominique Hervieu became artistic adviser to the Théâtre National de Chaillot and was appointed director of the venue’s youth programme. She conducted original arts-education actions, drawing on connections between dance works and artistic practices on the one hand, and on those between the arts on the other hand, in partnership with the Musée du Louvre and several other Paris institutions. She notably conceived a choreographic trail at the Louvre in 2004, attracting 5,000 spectators.

In 2001 she created "Mosaïque... Danse(s) d’une ville", a piece for 180 amateur dancers aged 15 to 85: a multicultural portrait in dance of the town of Créteil, which involved residents in the creative process. In 2002 and 2003 she devised two pieces on her own: "Intervallo Brio" at the Mettre en scène festival, a work for two virtuoso dancers, a grandfather and two little girls; and "Le Corbeau et le renard", a dance version of La Fontaine’s fable.

In 2006 she created "La Bossa Fataka" de Rameau with José Montalvo. With Montalvo she also choreographed and directed two operas : "Les Paladins", under the musical direction of William Christie of Les Arts Florissants, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (2004); and George Gershwin’s "Porgy and Bess" at the Opéra National de Lyon (2008).
Also in 2006, Dominique Hervieu created L’artde la rencontre - Cartes postales chorégraphiques for " Les Francophonies ! " festival, in conjunction with four choreographers from the Francophone world. These collaborations gave rise to 12 filmed duos and provided the material for a documentary for Arte. In June 2008, Hervieu was appointed director of the Théâtre National de Chaillot. The duo’s most recent work, "Orphée", was staged in 2010. In July that year she initiated Imaginez Maintenant, a national event to promote young artists, in conjunction with France’s High Commissioner for Youth and its Council for Artistic Creation.  

In March 2010, she was appointed by the city of Lyon and the Urban Community of Lyon, artistic director of the Biennale de la danse and the Maison de la danse de Lyon, positions she will take up on July 1, 2011.

Since 2011, Dominique Hervieu has worked for the development and influence of dance in Lyon and beyond its borders. Its programming, both cutting-edge and popular, avoids any form of aesthetic exclusion and brings together an increasingly numerous and curious audience. She leads local and international development, civic and social actions, the educational and digital component of the Maison de la Danse and the Dance Biennale, and the development of the production of national and international choreographic works.

In 2012, at the Biennale de la Danse, she initiated a policy of programming in public spaces by offering free shows for all audiences. (Recital for 40 by Mourad Merzouki (2012) and Swan Lake (2014) by Dada Masilo were presented in front of 16,000 people gathered at Place Bellecour). At the Maison de la Danse, she sets up “Nomad Houses” to get closer to different audiences and take dance “where it does not go” and throughout the territory, in remand centers , hospitals, libraries, shopping centers, museums…

In 2013, the Maison de la Danse became the supporting structure of the Resource Center for artistic and cultural education, dance and movement arts in the Rhône-Alpes region with the support of the Rectorate of the Academy of Lyon and the Ministry of Culture and Communication. Dominique Hervieu chooses artists “associated” with the Maison de la Danse who guarantee a strong artistic presence in the region. It also puts in place innovative and accessible mediation tools to raise ever wider awareness of dance, such as The Spectator's Minute, a one-minute video which presents its work and its author to the public. Under the leadership of Dominique Hervieu, Numeridanse continues its development with a 320% increase in views on its site in 3 years.

Since 2014, Dominique Hervieu has been developing the international aspect of the Dance Biennale Parade by inviting groups from major European cities (Turin and Barcelona). With the Lyon team, she exports the Lyon Biennale Parade to Turin as part of the Torino Danza festival.

In 2015, in order to share with the inhabitants of Lyon the challenges of choreographic creation, she created the Babel 8.3 project, a participatory show which brings together on stage 300 amateurs aged 4 to 95 from the 8th and 3rd arrondissements of Lyon. The show is accompanied live by musicians from the Orchester national de Lyon to scores by Mozart.

In January 2016, she obtained the “European Production Center” label for the Maison de la Danse from the Ministry of Culture and Communication to support European creation. In July 2016, Dominique Hervieu curated a day of dance in public spaces as part of San Sebastian European Capital of Culture. The same year, just after the Nice attack, she succeeded, with all the artistic and technical teams and the 5,000 participants, in maintaining the Dance Biennale Parade by transferring and readapting it, in three weeks , inside the Gerland stadium in Lyon.

En 2018, elle est la directrice artistique de la Triennale de  Yokohama Dance, Dance, Dance. Depuis 2022, elle est également directrice  de la culture au sein de l'organisme animant les jeux olympiques Paris 2024, chargé d'un programme d'animation culturelle, en parallèle de ces jeux, touchant 750 villes de France.  

Montalvo, José

At the end of his teenage years, José Montalvo began studying history of art and plastic arts. He was fascinated by the Dada period and its countless inventions. Whilst continuing his university studies, he took dance classes with Jerome Andrews and Françoise and Dominique Dupuy – and joined their company, the Ballets Modernes de Paris – and continued his dance training with Carolyn Carlson, Lucinda Childs, Alwin Nikolais and Merce Cunningham.

José Montalvo's first creations were short fun-filled pieces, types of choreographic aphorisms, mini danced novels filled with emotions, for which he was honoured with a variety of international awards. One of his performers was called Dominique Hervieu: it was the beginning of an artistic adventure and profound complicity that would result in the creation of the compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu in 1988. In 1989, José Montalvo moved on to an innovational path with the creation of “in situ” events: Dances to see and to dance. In July 1993, invited to the Paris Quartier d'été Festival, he was one of the first choreographers to be associated with the Bal Moderne which was created at the Théâtre National de Chaillot at this time.

Another decisive moment the same year: “Double Trouble”, created with the complicity of the video artist Michel Coste, inaugurated a cycle of works where technological images and the physical presence of dancers were confronted with each other. This period led to the creation of a series of works that intertwine with each other and that, whilst being self-sufficient, could, one day, be applied together, like a great baroque-style fresco. This led to great success. In 1998, José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu were appointed as directors of the Centre chorégraphique national (National Choreographic Centre) in Creteil, Val de Marne. In 2000, José Montalvo was also appointed as dance director of the Théâtre National de Chaillot which was then directed by Ariel Goldenberg.

In 2001, “Le Jardin io io ito ito” was awarded the Laurence Olivier Prize. In 2004, the choreography and the production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera “Les Paladins” won unanimous critical acclaim. The performance was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Prize and obtained the prize for the best live recording of an opera for the film produced by François Roussillon. It was also shown in Shanghai, Athens, Paris and Tokyo. Next followed “On danse”(2005) and a diptych devoted to George Gershwin in 2008, with a production of “Porgy and Bess”for the Opéra de Lyon and, echoing this, a luminous choreographic work created for the Biennale de la danse in Lyon: “Good Morning, Mr. Gershwin”.

In 2006, he was awarded the SACD Prize for all of his works. In June 2008, José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu accepted the proposal to direct the Théâtre National de Chaillot. “Orphée” and “Lalala Gershwin” were created in 2010 and sealed their last joint creations before Dominique Hervieu left to become director of the Maison de la Danse and the Biennale de la danse in Lyon. José Montalvo continues his missions at the Théâtre National de Chaillot alongside Didier Deschamps, around his own creations and privileges events that contribute to renewing the relationship of the theatre with the public. In June 2013, he will be, in particular, the creator and coordinator of an event focusing on amateur activities.

Aussel, Étienne

Etienne Aussel is a director of documentary films, multi-camera recordings, dance films. Videographer for performing arts and digital arts, he directs audiovisual projects. Trained as a shooting operator, he entered professional life in 1999 through contemporary dance and until 2008 worked as a video collaborator with choreographers José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu on creations and international tours of shows (Paradis, Babelle Heureuse, On danƒe, Les Paladins, Porgy and Bess).
Tour de Babelle A first documentary on dance of which he is the author was broadcast in 2004 on the Mezzo channel.
In 2009 he followed the training course in documentary cinema at the Ateliers Varan in Paris.
Two of his films made in French-speaking West Africa, Mowa and Autour de Tassiga, are distributed by Éditions l'Harmattan.
Between 2013 and 2015, he directed with Valérie Gabail the film SACRES, a feature documentary in official competition at FIPADOC in Biarritz and awarded at various international festivals.
He collaborates in video with artists such as the painter Guy Oberson, the choreographers Nasser Martin-Gousset, Aïcha M'Barek and Hafiz Dhaou, or the Nobel Prize for Literature Gao Xingjian whose latest feature film Le Deuil de la beauté is edited. .
In 2012 and 2016, he co-signed with choreographer Claire Jenny the staging of two pieces: Effigies, interactive video installations and performances broadcast at the National Center for Dance in Pantin, at the Abbaye de Noirlac and Echo, a piece choreography for 5 dancers (shown at the Atelier de Paris, at the CDA d'Enghien-les-Bains, at the Théâtre de Vitry)
At the same time, he teaches video creation for live shows at the 3IS film school and edits 52-minute films for various production companies. Holder of a Master 2 D2A in Law, Economics and Audiovisual Management and 2017, he is involved as assistant to the coordination and in the selection committee of the International Documentary Film Festival Après Varan for the edition 2019.
He works regularly as a director or chief editor at the Théâtre National de la Danse - Chaillot, at the CN D Cinémathèque de la danse or at the Atelier de Paris - CDCN, with the production companies 24 Images and Films d'un jour / OPSIS TV.
