Choreography Michele Di Stefano

Robinson's island has always been a place for our idea of the 'exotic', an undefined projective process of fears and desires, which nowadays deals with the increase of two opposite global streams: migrations and holidays. Robinson can be seen as a tourist but also as a refugee, eager to manage the rules of the society he is going to suit.
But unlike the protagonist of Defoe's tale, our Robinson looses himself into the landscape with no aim at reproducing the path of Western society; he enters a metamorphic zone until the encounter with the Other leads him to a total reinvention of the self. That's what happens in Michel Tournier's book Friday or the other island.
Choreography can be seen as an act of learning towards the outside world: it is the language of the encounter with the other, a place where different projects and different reactions exist to produce a single dance, as a tale of destinations rather than origins. What Robinson seems to tell us is that Otherness can really structure a world.

Di Stefano, Michele

Michele Di Stefano curates the company mk, an independent group based in Rome that deals with performance, choreography and sound research, and whose projects - developed since 1999 - were presented at the major festivals of the new scene. The various musical collaborations, the hosting of external performers, the intricate network of experimental laboratories contributed to the rapid shifts of the objectives of the group, currently interested in building prototypes of extemporaneous habitats. Among their last productions: Robinson, Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni, Quattro danze coloniali viste da vicino, Grand Tour, and Instruction Series. Besides shows and performances Michele Di Stefano gives lectures and workshops, investigating unusual formats in hybrid projects such as Wasted, Clima, Accademie Eventuali, Reform club and the recent Piattaforma della Danza Balinese conceived with the italian choreographers Cristina Rizzo and Fabrizio Favale. MK is one of the five formations selected for the book Corpo sottile. Uno sguardo sulla nuova coreografia europea (Ubulibri, Milano 2003). In 2014 the Venice Dance Biennale awarded Di Stefano with the Leone d’argento per la Danza.
