A video-choreographic illustration of Geneviève Sorin’s show, Chansons, hommage sentimental à Mac Orlan, in a series of short sequences. André Jaume’s laconic saxophone annotates, to a composition by Raymond Boni, this sentimental and casual evocation of the realistic universe of Mac Orlan, constructed as though by trial and error and possessing the heady flavour of a day dream. 

 The voice of the dancer and singer Pascale Degli-Esposti nonchalantly recites refrains written by each interpreter in relation with the literary imagination of the writer, the dedicatee of the show. The image chisels the duos and ensembles in a visual murmur where atmospheres and situations are barely skimmed. This production highlights the art of ellipsis of the Marseilles choreographer.

Sorin, Geneviève

In the 1970s, in Paris, after finishing her classical dance studies with Igor Fosca, Geneviève Sorin became involved in contemporary dance which was just emerging in France and became a performer for companies including Félix Blaska, the Ballet Théâtre Contemporain, Joseph Russillo, the Ballets de la Cité, the Ballet de Poche, Susan Buirge and danced Dominique Bagouet’s first creations.

At the beginning of the 1980s, she left Paris and settled in Marseille. Here, she established the Atelier de Recherche Chorégraphique. She gave a succession of performances in the most diverse venues, multiplied musical and choreographic adventures... a host of original experiences which would lead her to journey into improvisation. She asserted herself as a choreographer, a dancer, a teacher and a musician (accordion).

After several creations, she got together with Dominique Bagouet again who commissioned her to write a work in 1989: Allo ! Mr Baril ? (Dominique Bagouet and Geneviève Sorin as a duo). Their partnership continued that year with Meublé sommairement.

With Chansons in 1989, she formed her own company. Her research focuses on improvisation in dance and in music. Her choreographic creation is enriched through her own musical talents and through regular collaboration with jazz musicians.

Following on from a two-year residence in Aubagne, then a four-year residence-installation (2000-2003) which stemmed from artistic collaboration between the Théâtre des Bernardines, the Théâtre du Merlan – Marseille’s national theatre, and Geneviève Sorin, the company inaugurated the Cent Soixante-Quatre in April 2005 and set itself up on its own premises, grouping together its artistic, technical and administrative teams. It went on to become Pôle 164 in 2005 - Pôle de Création et de Développement des Publics à l'Art Chorégraphique (Centre for choreographic art creation and audience development), conjointly with the Itinérrances Company.

To date, Geneviève Sorin has created over twenty choreographic and musical works, a radio drama, two records and several choreographic and musical commissions.
